Audi R8 Headlights

LEDs are here. What is next? Solid-state light technology has opened the doors to many new and exciting automotive illumination systems never possible before. As sensor technologies continue to evolve and mature, lighting systems now have the capability to produce light that adapts to the real-time environment of the vehicle.

Back in 2003, the ERL was crucially involved in the early phase of the integration of LEDs for front vehicle illumination. After building some initial prototypes, we supported the buildup of the LED headlamps in an Audi racing concept car. Our vision for front illumination was finally realized in the Audi R8, which is the first series production vehicle with a full LED headlamp.

The light of tomorrow is being engineered today at Volkswagen’s Electronics Research Laboratory.
