Vehicle Infrastrucuture Integration for Safety and Mobility

The ERL has been working with other automotive partners to enable wireless communication based safety and mobility applications. Together we have developed and validated the hardware, software architecture, and protocols to make vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication possible.

This, however, is just the beginning. This work paves the way for future collaborative networks of cars that can avoid creating traffic jams (leading to improved fuel efficiency) and safely avoid collisions just by talking to each other.

We have demonstrated multiple safety and mobility related applications based on 5.9GHz Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) between vehicle-to-infrastructure and vehicle-to-vehicle. Example applications include:

Intersection safety
Car-to-Car information sharing and vehicle probe data
Location based Pont-Of-Interest (POI) information delivery
Travel time and incident information
